Who are WatchDOGS (Dads Of Great Students)?

WatchDOGS are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer for at least one day each year at an official WATCH D.O.G.S. school. During the day, WatchDOGS may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Many school principals have reported that the mere presence of a WatchDOG dramatically reduces reports of bullying.

What are the benefits of WatchDOGS?

• Students gain positive male role models.

• Schools gain an extra set of eyes and ears. The presence of a father or father figure will provide an additional deterrent to bullying, enhance a sense of security in the building, and will help to create an environment conducive to learning.

• Fathers get a glimpse of their students’ everyday world and learn about the increasingly complex challenges and decisions today’s youth are facing. As a result, they can learn to relate better to their student and hopefully connect with them.

• Fathers gain a greater awareness of the positive impact they can have on their student’s life in three critical areas including: academic performance, self-esteem, social behavior.

• Due to budget shortfalls and cutbacks, often teachers are presented with larger classrooms each year. The WatchDOGS volunteers provide real and important help for the teachers and the students.

What are the steps to become Whitestone WatchDOGS?

1. Register to become an LISD Approved Volunteer (update required annually).

2. Get on the WatchDOGS mailing list here, or chat with a TopDOG

3. Schedule your day with the TopDOG to be a Whitestone WatchDOG! See the calendar below to find open days.  Your student's birthday is always a special option!

What should you expect for your WatchDOGS day?

• A week or two before your scheduled WatchDOGS day, the TopDOGS team will work with you to build a personalized schedule for the day.  

• Wear your WatchDOGS shirt if you have one, or any other Whitestone shirt if not!

• Arrive on-time with your student and park in the featured WatchDOG of the Day spot in the front parking lot.

• Check in at the receptionists desk for your lanyard and ID tag, and accompany your student to their homeroom.

• Follow your personalized schedule!  Be Approachable; Be Smart; Be Alert; Be Available; Be a Positive Role Model!

¿Quiénes son los WatchDOGS (Dads Of Great Students / Papás de Excelentes Estudiantes)?

WatchDOGS son padres, abuelos, tíos y otras figuras paternas que se ofrecen como voluntarios por lo menos un día al año en una escuela oficial del programa WATCH D.O.G.S. Durante ese día, los WatchDOGS pueden leer y trabajar con tarjetas educativas con los estudiantes, jugar en el recreo, almorzar con ellos, vigilar las entradas y pasillos de la escuela, ayudar con el flujo del tráfico, y participar en otras actividades asignadas donde interactúan activamente no solo con sus propios hijos, sino también con otros estudiantes.

Muchos directores escolares han reportado que la sola presencia de un WatchDOG reduce drásticamente los reportes de acoso escolar (bullying).

¿Cuáles son los beneficios de WatchDOGS?

• Los estudiantes ganan modelos masculinos positivos.

• Las escuelas obtienen un par de ojos y oídos extra. La presencia de un padre o figura paterna adicional brinda una mayor disuasión contra el acoso escolar, mejora el sentido de seguridad en el edificio y contribuye a un ambiente favorable para el aprendizaje.

• Los padres tienen un vistazo al mundo cotidiano de sus hijos y aprenden sobre los desafíos y decisiones complejas que enfrentan los jóvenes hoy en día. Como resultado, pueden aprender a relacionarse mejor con sus hijos y, con suerte, fortalecer su conexión.

¿Qué puedes esperar en tu día como WatchDOG?

• Una o dos semanas antes de tu día programado, el equipo de TopDOGS trabajará contigo para crear un horario personalizado para el día.

• Usa tu camiseta de WatchDOGS si tienes una, o cualquier otra camiseta de Whitestone si no.

• Llega puntual con tu hijo(a) y estaciona en el lugar reservado para el WatchDOG del Día, en el estacionamiento del frente.

• Regístrate en la recepción para recibir tu gafete e identificación, y acompaña a tu hijo(a) a su salón de clase

• ¡Sigue tu horario personalizado!
  ¡Sé accesible! Sé inteligente. Mantente alerta. Está disponible. Sé un modelo positivo a seguir.
